色彩定義對寶石鑑定而言相當重要，在市場上有許多寶石色彩「濃淡」、「彩度」、「變色效果強弱」會影響鑑定所判決結果，實際案例不勝枚舉：紅寶跟粉剛、祖母綠跟綠色綠柱石、金綠寶石跟亞歷山大石、蓮花剛玉跟粉紅藍寶。GIA所認可的彩寶比色工具類型有兩種，一種是軟體比色，一種是色票比色。GIA曾與色票大廠Pantone合作生產一套GEMSET寶石色票，包含完整324片套組與簡易版50片套組，兩套皆已經絕版多年。台灣聯合珠寶玉石鑑定中心兼採軟體比色以及完整版GEMSET，惟有嚴謹的比色，才可避免寶石鑑定不出錯。想瞭解寶石的色彩學基礎嗎，請詳讀林所長所著「實用寶石學」一書！不然也可以報名台灣聯合珠寶玉石鑑定中心的寶石課程呦！
Color definition is very important to gem identification, for the hue, tone, saturation of color affect the judgement of gem lab. For example, ruby vs pink sapphire, emerald vs green beryl, chrysoberyl vs alexandrite or pink sapphire vs padparadscha. There are two kinds of color definition tool: gemesquare software and GIA GEMSET. GEMSET is plastic color chips developed by GIA and pantone, including 50-chip GEMSET and 324-chip GEMSET. TULAB gemologists use gemesquare and GEMSET as well to make sure we make precise definition of gem color.
